For the perfect wedding day, you need the perfect wedding venue. You want somewhere with character and style; somewhere that lives up to the venue that you have dreamed about since you were a child. It is not the thing to do on the ‘cheap’, because it has such a marked effect on the wedding as a whole.
You only get married once (hopefully), so you want to do it right, and to do something right, you need to do it in the right place. Where the right place for you is will be dependent on your personal preferences, but you will have no shortage of venues to choose from. In deed, there will be so many to choose from, that you might even be a little overwhelmed. So, what needs to be considered when choosing your wedding venue?
The first consideration is how many people will be attending. Normally, two thirds of the guests you invite will go, but you should always have extra sits, just in case, which is why it pays to chose a large place. Alternatively, you can request that people give you a definite answer as to whether they will be attending well in advance of the day, so then you will know the exact number that will attend.
You may also consider having two venues; one for the wedding ceremony and one for the reception. In general, more guests go to the reception than the wedding, so you should consider this when planning your venues. It is important that the two be close to each other, so that as little of your special day as possible is spent traveling around.
Having made a list of potential venues based on a little research, you should take a camera and a notebook and go to visit them. Take notes about what you like and do not like, take lots of pictures, and write down ideas regarding themes, decorations and color schemes.
In general, historical buildings or botanical gardens make ideal wedding venues. You want somewhere with an atmosphere of both warmth and grandeur, a place that is peaceful and has been well cared for. But a wedding venue is more than the place itself.
Some wedding venues will have their own stylist, their photographer, their DJ, their own flower suppliers, etc. This can take a lot of hassle out of the preparations, though you end up paying a premium for them. However, they tend not to be compulsory, so you can always see what prices they are charging and than see how much it differs from the standard price before deciding whether to take up that option.
So, think carefully before choosing your wedding venue and make sure you do not rush your decision. Whilst it is not the most important part (you and your partner are) of the day, it will play a part in how fondly you look back on your wedding day in years to come.
